Family: A Book

Family: A Book
Subject
Studio Arts
Description
Accordion-folded book housed in a wooden box with a front door that opens with a ribbon pull tab. Illustrations are of household tools or utensils which are meant to represent family members--hammer represents father, spatula represents mother, screwdriver represents brother, scissors represents sister. These four tools are overlaid on dictionary-style definitions of each family member. The book suggests that the family unit has preconceived gender and sex roles for each family member, which serve as a tool of socialization and sterotype beyond the family. One folded strip of Guttenberg Laid paper producing 7 pages in an accordion structure. Silkscreen and letterpress. Verso of box stamped with dictionary entry for Family. Issued in an edition of 100, numbered and signed by the artist.
