Description

In classical times the Oxus River was the boundary of the known world. It is now called the Amu Darya and is the source of water for much of the irrigation in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.--[p.1]. Diverting the waters of the Amu Darya for irrigation projects has led to the destruction of the Aral Sea, once the fourth largest body of fresh water on the planet.
