Leaf from Latin "Sermones"
Title
Leaf from Latin "Sermones"
Description
From a Latin manuscript dated 1434, containing the "sermones" of Simon de Cremona, prepared in the Scriptorium (as monastic writing-rooms were called) of the famous Carthusian monastery at Buxheim. Caspar Misnensis was the scribe, and he informs us that he finishing writing out these sermons on the fifth day before the feast of Saint Erasmus the Martyr in 1434. The remarkably fine state of preservation of this MS. might make one question its authenticity, until one feels the texture of the beautiful linen paper, and examines its fearfully involved chirography, which, as will be seen, is written in a gnarled yet picturesque, quasi-cursive gothic, and is pleasingly rubricated." -Pages from the Past
