<text>This illuminated page was made in Flanders in about 1475. The writing is in a single 14-line column, the border on both sides is a firmly-defined rectangle latticed into triangles filled with cinnamon, deep sky blue, and gold which frame simple sprigs of flowers including thistle and violet. Whether this leaf was once part of a specimen set of Ege's <em>Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts</em> is not known, but it does retain evidence of mounting tape of the kind used by Ege.&nbsp; It was purchased in 2012 on Ebay using a speaking honorarium from the Aldus Society of Columbus, and is donated to the William Howard Doane Library at Denison University in the Society's honor.&nbsp; Denison is already the owner of an Ege manuscript leaf portfolio and so this leaf is now the second from its parent manuscript to be part of its Special Collections.<br /><br />The text on the leaft contains most of Psalm 24; it was part of the Hours of the Blessed Virgin intended to be read (in this particular case) upon first waking on a Sunday, Monday or Thursday.&nbsp; The verso side of the leaf ends with an antiphon indicated with red initial A.</text>

At important festival services such as Christmas and Easter these small hymnals were generally used by the laymen as they walked in procession to the various altars. Much of the material incorporated in the hymnals was based on folk melodies. Hymns, like the other chants of the Church, varied according to their place in the liturgy. Their melodies are frequently distinguished by a refrain which was sung at the beginning and at the end of each stanza.

The initial letter design of this leaf persisted with little or no change for a long period, but the simple pendant spear was used as a distinctive motif for not more than twenty-five years.

The ink for the main text and the notes is a dark grey. A distinctive spear or javelin stands guard along the left margin of one side of the leaf. The vellum is clean and bright, and the red, blue, and white inkwork has been very carefully applied; the gold leaf, too, shows an expert's hand and has survived the centuries beautifully.

<text>France; Early 16th Century. Latin Text; Cursive Gothic Script.

This beautiful manuscript leaf was written and illuminated about the year 1535 A.D. At this late date Books of Hours were also being printed in great numbers by such famous French printers as Vostre, de Colines, and Tory. These were elaborately illustrated and frequenly hand-colored.

The cursive gothic script used in this leaf, with its boldly accented letters and flourished initials, borrowed heavily from the decorative chancery or legal hands of the 13th and 14th centuries. It influenced the type face known as civilité, designed by Granjon, and first used in 1559 A.D.

This is the latest, or most recent, of the 50 leaves in the Ege portfolio. The cursive script is quite distinctive; notice especially the variety of directions and styles of the ascenders. By contrast the large illuminated initials seem very bulky and old-fashioned. Lesser first letters are filled with yellow.

A Missal gives the service of the mass and is used by the clergy. The text is lengthy and in this large script would occupy many hundred pages. One wonders why this particular manuscript copy on vellum was written some forty years after Antonius Zarotus had printed the first Missal in Milan (1471 A.D.), for, at this time, Missals were frequently reprinted on paper and sold at only a fraction of the cost of a manuscript copy. This bâtarde style of semi-gothic script was the molding force for the fraktur and schwabacher type-faces which dominated German printing for several centuries.

This very large leaf demonstrates a high contrast between leaf surface and inks. There is a contents abbreviation in the top center of each recto, possibly a gathering guide (letter + number).

<text>The Netherlands; Late 15th Century. Latin Text; Lettre de Forme. In the 15th century Books of Hours were as much in demand in the Netherlands as they were in France and England. In many of these books it is difficult to distinguish the Dutch Hours from those of Northern France or the Rhineland. In the middle of the century this whole area was interested in naturalism and made its illustrations so vivid that sometimes they approached those of our seed catalogues. It is not difficult to recognize carnations, pansies, columbines, and strawberries. The style later became even more realistic when the naturalistic flowers were painted with cast shadows. When such flowery decorations are found on a rather heavy piece of vellum, entangled with the swirling acanthus leaf and accompanied by a heavy lettre de forme script, one can be fairly safe in assigning the leaf to the province of Brabant. It was a difficult technical achievement at this time to apply the gouache colors to gold leaf so that they would adhere without flaking.<br /><br />Compared to the other specimens of fifteenth-century Books of Hours in the portfolios, this one contains highly "itemized" pages: the red ink used for the rubrications sharply contrasts with the brown ink; several 1- or 2-line initials rendered in gold on a background of blue or red bring light into the text block of most leaves; and many lesser first letters are filled with yellow. Despite this lavish plan, all leaves from this manuscript show evidence of problematic adherence of the gold leaf, and/or incomplete decoration or text.
<p><strong>Text</strong>: This leaf contains text from the "short" version of the Hours of the Holy Spirit, from Nones, through Verspers, and Compline, and into the closing "Recommendatione." See <a href="http://www.chd.dk/tutor/HSSpiritu.php">http://www.chd.dk/tutor/HSSpiritu.php</a> for more information.</p></text>

<text>The Netherlands; Late 15th Century. Latin Text; Angular Gothic Script.

In assigning this leaf from a Book of Hours to the Netherlands it must be remembered that some sections of that country were once part of France, while others belonged to what is now Germany. In this leaf French characteristics predominate, but in no other country did the study of nature have a more direct influence on miniatures and ornamentations that in the Netherlands. Carnations, pansies, columbines, and many other flowers were faultlessly and realistically drawn. A few decades later, at the turn of the century, cast shadows as well as snails, butterflies, and birds were added, with the result that the borders became a distraction to the reader.

The borders on these leaves come in two forms. Some are composed of a firmly-defined rectangle filled to its edge with solid color (dominated by cinnamon, deep sky blue, and gold) rendered in a decorative conceit (triangles, waves, bars) and framing simple flower sprigs. Other borders are less boldly outlined and are not filled with solid colors; instead, a speckled background hosts a strong acanthus vine and a wildflower spray in which a live creature (a bird, a human, a zoomorph) may lurk. While this leaf may have been created in the Netherlands, its rubricated headings are in French.
