Jamie Weaver: ""After recently attending the Mildred Haun Conference on Appalachian Studies, I became intrigued by a presentation on traditional homemade folk remedies. This triggered childhood memories of rambling through the woods with my father on our West Virginia farm to dig ginseng and sassafras roots for making tea. Now that my father is gone, I attempt here to acquaint myself with homemade folk remedies as a way of reconstructing memories of my father and healing my grief over his untimely death. Everyone has faith in something: a higher power, the human spirit, a cure. In Faith Medicine, I wrestle with the following questions: To what extent can a remedy truly heal us? Is it less painful to hold on to memories, or to purge them from our system? I think that if something heals us, it is largely because we choose to believe that it does."" Each recipe card has an herbal recipe on one side with an associated memory of the artist's father on the other side. Recipe for Flu: Boneset (Eupatorium Perfoliatum) Use 1 1/2 tsp. dried herb (stem, leaves, and flower) for each cup of water. Steep for 15 minutes. Sweeten liberally with honey to counter the bitter taste. Drink 1/2 cup hot tea every hour, at least 5 times a day to relieve symptoms. Memory of her being with her father when she had flu like symptoms: My dad and I took a trip to Hawaii over winter break one year when I was in high school. I felt sick to my stomach after the flight, so I took some Pepto-Bismol once we checked into our hotel. I threw up the Pepto-Bismol on the floor, and the cleaning lady was mad because it was a new hotel and I'd left a bright pink stain on the carpet. <a href="http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/w/Jamie-Weaver.html">http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/w/Jamie-Weaver.html</a>"</text>

SFCB: ""Rabbitpox, written and illustrated by Allison Weiner, casts rabbits as the heroes and the pawns in a tale of biological warfare. The story is inspired by a 2004 Harper's Magazine item describing American scientists as having engineered extra-lethal forms of mousepox, cowpox and, of course, rabbitpox. Allison's book combines text, inventive design, and diagrammatic illustrations with a whole lot of personality to find humor, absurdity, and alarm at the dark extremes of biological science. ""Each book is housed in a handmade box and bound with thread spun by Pam [De Luco] from the fur of her pet rabbit Charisma, a white German Angora who reportedly had a show career. ""Allison [Weiner] is a Bay Area creative who studied at Stanford University, The San Francisco Art Institute, and the California College of the Arts. Rabbitpox is her first artist's book edition. Hand colored pictures of women applying blush and tweezing, a heavily made-up face, and a tabletop array of cosmetics.

This small book housed in a mirrored compact expresses Woman's ambivalent relationship with cosmetics as both agent of transformation and of potential denial and constraint. Brief reminiscences of Charm School and of one sister tweezing another's eyebrows depict make-up's function as a rite of passage for girls, a chance to choose their own personas, what faces they will wear in the world. Make-up is part of the private language of women, a modern day initiation which we embrace or reject. As you read, peer over the top of the book into the mirrored lid at your own natural or made-up image and reflect on your choice."</text>

<text>Colophon: "This book is a small collection of stories taken from the 1916 The Real Mother Goose by Blanche Fisher Wright. Having been in print for almost 100 years - the most recent printing taking place in 1992 - The Real Mother Goose has influenced the lives of children over many generations. This book explores the evolution of language and image under contemporary connotations by obstructing and omitting portions of the original stories. The end goal of this remixed and redacted edition is to create a slightly different narrative calling on the linguistic differences created in the 100 year time span." <a href="http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/s/spaceheater-editions.html">http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/s/spaceheater-editions.html</a></text>

<text>Body Transmission Towers began during my residency at Struts & Faucet. Driving into Sackville from Nova Scotia on the first day of the residency, I immediately felt the loss of the Radio Canada International shortwave towers. I had become accustomed to them as an anchoring feature signalling arrival into Sackville. The towers were removed in March 2014, after 67 years of service. I was struck by how their memory was visual yet also felt - a way of orienting the body in relation to space. I thought of the body as its own transmission site, where emotion and memory are projected outwards, always holding us in subjective relation to a space. In this case, I thought of thirteen bodies acting as their own transmission vessels. The body transmitting memory back to the RCI site. I ran ads asking for people to drive (or walk) with me to their most remembered spot for viewing the RCI towers. Quickly, I had many volunteers. Some had worked at RCI Sackville, others had lived around the area for much, or all, of their lives. I enjoyed the drives and conversations with all those who participated. Thank you. Many thanks to the fine folks (Amanda, Elliott, Cynthia) at Struts & Faucet and the good people of Sackville. - Sheila Wilson, May 2014 (from envelope containing the postcards)</text>

<text>"The residue of a moment experienced by someone other than yourself now a constituent part of a consciousness that has no capacity to forget yet remembers very little is the complete title for this artists' book by Jason Workman. The content consists of photographs documenting a number of public interventions in New York and Melbourne, Australia. Two texts were written on paper and pomegranates respectively, and inserted into public spaces. Jason Workman, artist statement: ""My practice is concerned with introducing gestures, texts, and objects into public space. I am interested in the subtle intersection of these minimal and quiet interventions within the flux of everyday life. I refrain from differentiating 'art-practice' from the 'practice-of-living.' To this end, I have created interventions in my workplace, in retail spaces, on trains, in parks, on the sidewalk. etc. The interventions are poetic, ephemeral and often of a diminutive scale; therefore, they may be noticed by only a few people. If the work elicits a smile, a pause, a moment of disorientation in a small number of people, I consider this worthwhile. Essentially, this type of practice is intuitive and exploratory. It seeks opportunities in which to playfully engage with aspects of our everyday reality."" <a href="http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/e/everyday-press.html">http://www.vampandtramp.com/finepress/e/everyday-press.html</a>"</text>
