Title

Leaf from a Flemish Book of Hours

Subject

Book of Hours

Description

"From Flemish Book of Hours. A striking leaf with the customary wide margins and very careful workmanship. This manuscript, circa 1250-1300, reflects the Flemish or Northern French influence in the few initial letters where a clay base is encrusted over with gold paint. This leaf, however, has only the faint illumination of the initial letter in a soft gold, faded after six centuries. Note the fine quality of the vellum. Such books are becoming very scarce and one with even the suggestion of illumination becomes exceptionally costly." -Pages from the Past
