May 14, 1946: Mahard receives news that he has been granted a discharge. He begins the process of leaving the Army.
May 15, 1946: Mahard is making plans for things to take care of after his return to the states.
May 16, 1946: Mahard burned "all" of Marian's letters as he has no room. However, a very small handful have survived - possibly ones that he did not receive until after leaving Tokyo.
May 18, 1946: Mahard receives his order outlining the stops he has to make to be mustered out, ending with Camp Atterbury in Indiana.
May 19, 1946: Mahard's last letter from Tokyo.
May 20, 1946: Mahard was driven out to the Replacement Depot and settled in.
May 26, 1946: Mahard had to get a shot, so he missed a ship that left a couple days ago.
May 28, 1946: Mahard has all his necessary shots, so now he's just waiting for a ship.
May 30, 1946: Mahard has been told he will be leaving on the next ship that arrives - the Goucher Victory.
May 31, 1946: Dick Harvey has also apparently been discharged.
June 1, 1946: Mahard will set sail in the next day or two.
June 2, 1946: Mahard letting his parents know how soon he should be home.
June 2, 1946: Mahard is packed and ready to go.
June 11, 1946: Mahard has kept busy on the ship. He took on a typing job to avoid working in the kitchen.
June 13, 1946: Goucher Victory is in Puget Sound. The men will likely be let off in the morning.
June 16, 1946: Mahard is on a train currently going through Glacier National Park - just as he had done on his way to Fort Lewis.
